ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Hari & Deepti are a husband-wife artist duo based in Mumbai and previously based out of Denver. Their collaboration with paper and light started as an experiment in 2010. They are internationally known for their signature backlit papercut dioramas.
They moved to India from Denver in the fall of 2014. During this period they have travelled around Asia and Europe collecting inspirations and stories for their art.
They believe they are story tellers who bring their stories to life through their intricate paper cut light boxes. They have always been drawn towards the imaginative aspect of story telling. Stories have so many shades and depth in them, and paper as a medium has the exact qualities to reflect and interpret them. “Paper is brutal in its simplicity as a medium. It demands the attention of the artist while it provides the softness they need to mold it in to something beautiful. It is playful, light, colorless and colorful. It is minimal and intricate. It reflects light, creates depth and illusions in a way that it takes the artist through a journey with limitless possibilities.”
They have been featured in many publications including Colossal, Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose, Bored Panda, Supersonic Art, Laughing Squid, My Modern Met Blog, ArtFido, dpi magazine and published in books like Paper Play & The World of Paper Art. They have also created commissioned paper art for well known personalities like Neil Patrick Harris, Gus Kenworthy and creating album art covers for EDM Front man in India – Dualist Inquiry.
They have been curated to show at the prestigious art fairs like Context Art Fair, Select Art Fair and Scope Art Fair which is a part of the ART Basel show in Miami and New York and have exhibited there for 3 years in the running. They have also shown at galleries like Black Book Gallery (Denver), Svper Ordinary (Denver), Spoke Art (San Francisco), Lequivive (Oakland, SF), Archenemy Art (PA), Modus Gallery (Paris) and recently did their first solo show in Europe at the Blank Space Gallery in Oslo, Norway and a 2 month residency and solo show at Kaohsiung, Taiwan which included 2 large size paper installation.
In April 2016 they were invited by the Dubai Culture to be a part of the Dubai Art Season and to create a 6ft X 6ft paper cut installation.
They were recently commissioned to work on a Google Doodle celebrating the jounrey of the legendary 19th century Indian explorer Nain Singh Rawat.
Hari & Deepti have also worked on several book covers including the classic by George Macdonald “The Princess & the Goblin” for Penguin Classic UK. Their latest work was for New York times best selling children’s book author Cassie Beasley for her book “Tumble & Blue”. This book was also listed under most notable children’s books of 2017 by New York Times.
They have also painted 4 murals including one of their largest murals in Denver, Colorado – a 125ft mural for New Belgium Brewing in the heart of the city. Their Globeville mural commissioned by the Denver Urban Arts Funds was also voted as the Best New Mural in Denver for the year 2014 by Westword. In the fall of 2015 they finished painting a mural at a rural village school run by the NGO – Gram Vikas in Kankia, Odisha. This was a part of an art workshop they conducted at the art space – Kalpanadham for the local kids, promoting art and creative thinking.
