MERRIMACK RIVER, 2:36 AM (SHORTHAND)

LAUREN ELMA FRAMENT

you should know

the small knoll where we used

& used to leave our clothes & fall

into the rill & wade                 is gone—

          a fool to time & rain /

          the thief we have called flood;

the year of the wet spell

we could still go back

for old times’ sake—

          leave the garb in the car

          run bare through the woods

trees set in tight rows / find a new

spot or else sprint to that same dead hill

but above a creek not like this one—

          one in which we bathe

& do not leave
