Blight is a runner up in the 2017 Birdwhistle Prizes.
It showed most in the backyard: the garden
grown dry with rot – tomato stalks fallen
and the dried leaves in every corner.
The drought-stricken limes, shriveled
on their branches. All the work
it takes to make a house a home, undone.
In time, we restored it. Cleared beds to
plant new seeds––as reminders, in memoriam.
We didn’t get that far the first weekend
but we made progress, carried away
the stalks of what the drought had killed
soft loam and mold stinking in every handful.
