grows busy with wasps, its flesh
mellowing with the grey gilt
and honeycrust of rot.
The sense of things ending
glazes their hum. Heart-shaped leaves
 
of penny-hedge, and silver
leaves of felon-herb, begin
to yellow. Silver dragees of dew
gather mildew.
Bees harrow and hector
 
the softening blooms for the last
residue of sweet grime.
Bark and moss and soil bruises.
Orchard moths pleat their wings,
ease into dormancy.
